2024 Resumen
27 de diciembre de 2024
Dear Friends of Ara Manzanillo,
As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on an incredible year of progress in protecting and reintroducing las gran lapas verdes (great green macaws) to the skies of Caribe Sur, Costa Rica. Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to expand our conservation efforts, enrich ecosystems, and inspire communities to connect with nature and take action.
Here are some highlights of what we’ve achieved together this year:
Reintroduction Success
This year, six macaw chicks hatched in our artificial nest boxes, a testament to years of dedication in restoring safe breeding environments. These young macaws now soar freely, foraging around the station and learning from their parents how to survive in the wild.
One particularly moving story is that of Jupiter, a chick whose life hung in the balance after a severe botfly infection. Thanks to our partnership with the Jaguar Rescue Center and the generosity of donors, Jupiter was saved through critical care and hand-feeding support. Now, Jupiter thrives alongside the flock—a living symbol of resilience and hope.

Reforestation & Habitat Restoration
Our team has worked tirelessly to reforest critical areas, planting native trees to provide an abundance of natural food sources not only for macaws but for countless other jungle species. Every tree planted creates a ripple effect, ensuring future generations of wildlife can flourish. In addition, we hosted 10 beach cleanup days this year, removing trash and plastic from the coastline to protect marine life and ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for all species.
Education: Connecting Hearts and Minds
Through engaging storytelling and cultural connections, we reached over 2,000 students across Costa Rica and El Salvador this year. Using the Bribri origin story featuring Pewe, the great green macaw, we deepened students’ understanding of their cultural roots and the importance of biodiversity. These young learners left inspired to play a role in conservation efforts. This year also brought exciting new opportunities, like partnering with PBS Kids’ MENHAYTI, hosted by Erik the Reptile Guy. The program showcased the incredible work being done at Ara Manzanillo, highlighting the beauty and significance of the rainforest ecosystem while introducing children to the wonders of macaws. For the nature-loving children in your life, consider checking out MENHAYTI's newest magazine and interactive Zoom series—a fun way for kids to explore the jungle and discover new animals every week.

Your Support Makes This Possible
Every donation you make allows us to:
• Purchase chick formula to ensure the health and safety of young macaws, like Jupiter.
• Expand our educational outreach to inspire the next generation of conservationists.
• Reforest habitats critical to the survival of great green macaws.
• Host beach clean-ups to encourage healthy and natural foraging.
On this Giving Tuesday, we invite you to stand with us in our mission to protect these magnificent birds and the ecosystems they call home. Together, we can ensure that the skies of Caribe Sur remain filled with the vibrant calls and colors of the great green macaws.
