Dear Friends and Supporters,
Greetings and welcome to the Breeding Season edition of our newsletter from Ara Manzanillo! We are delighted to share with you the exciting progress and achievements from breeding season in our ongoing mission to reintroduce the magnificent Great Green Macaws to their native habitat in Costa Rica’s Caribbean corridor.
Great Green Macaw Breeding Season Highlights
We are thrilled to report the successful hatching of four precious, wild chicks: Barbosa, Namü, Carrot, and Jupiter.
Witnessing Barbosa and Namü taking their inaugural flights serves as a testament to the dedication of their parents and the effectiveness of our nest box efforts to protect the families. Even now, after two chicks have fledged and two still grow in the nests, the Macaw parents will continue to care for their young over the next year plus – providing feedings, teaching to forage and fly, and Macaw jungle survival skills.
Amidst the successes, nesting pair Ronnie and Rocket presented us with a unique challenge this season. Their deviation from the typical asynchronous egg-laying pattern led to a 10-day age difference between siblings, Carrot and Jupiter. You can learn more on their story!
The gregariousness of this species is a great joy to witness. Extending from tender parenting to life-long coupling, flying together sun-up to sun-down, sharing every meal together, the Great Green Macaw are truly communal – and moreover family-oriented species.

As we continue closely monitoring the four new hatchlings, our commitment remains unwavering to provide support and resources for the additional 110+ reintroduced Great Green Macaws from our site!
