Hi, my name’s Alex, and I’m from sunny England. Over the summer, I finished my degree in Wildlife Conservation and was looking for hands-on work where I could really make a difference. That’s when I came across ARA, an amazing project looking for volunteers to help reintroduce one of the most endangered—and beautiful—birds in the world: the great green macaw. As soon as I found out about it,

I knew it would be something incredible to be part of, but nothing could have prepared me for just how amazing the experience would actually be.

Living in the jungle, completely surrounded by untouched nature, was unlike anything I’ve ever done before. Waking up to the calls of macaws every morning was surreal, and no two days were ever the same. One day, I’d be climbing into the canopy to check nests, taking in the most incredible views, and the next, I’d be giving tours to people from all over the world who were just as fascinated by these birds as I was.

I genuinely felt like I was making a difference every single day. Whether it was feeding the birds, monitoring their progress, or helping with other conservation tasks, I could actually see the impact of the work we were doing, which was such an incredible feeling. Even now, thinking back on it gives me goosebumps.

But honestly, what made the experience even better was the amazing team I got to work with. They were some of the most knowledgeable, passionate, and inspiring people I’ve ever met, and they knew how to make every day fun. There was never a dull moment with them, and we shared so many laughs along the way.

Being an ARA volunteer is something I’ll carry with me forever. I feel so lucky to have had the chance to be part of such an incredible project in such an amazing place. It’s an experience I’ll always treasure, and I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who made it so special.
